Before You Add Another Scoop...

Sometimes the best feeding decisions start with a question, not a product.

Walk into almost any feed room and you'll find a collection of bags, tubs, scoops and supplements. Each one probably has a reason for being there.

But when was the last time you looked at the whole picture?

We often focus on what we're putting into the feed bucket, yet for many horses, the largest part of their daily diet is growing right beneath their feet.

And that paddock doesn't stay the same all year.

The grass changes with the seasons. Hay varies from one cut to another. Workloads change, horses age, and nutritional requirements shift.

What worked beautifully six months ago might not be quite right today.

The feed bucket is only part of the story

A horse might be receiving several different supplements while still lacking something important in its overall diet.

Equally, it might already be receiving enough of a particular nutrient without needing anything extra.

The same goes for fibre. A paddock full of green grass doesn't necessarily tell us everything about the horse's total forage intake or the type of fibre it's consuming.

It's worth asking a few simple questions:

  • What's my horse getting from its pasture and hay?

  • Is there enough suitable forage available throughout the day?

  • Am I supplementing something that's genuinely missing?

  • Could some of the products I'm feeding be doubling up?

Sometimes less really is more

There's a temptation to believe that adding another product must be doing something beneficial.

But good feeding isn't about how many ingredients are in the bucket.

It's about making the whole diet work together.

The right amount of fibre, appropriate mineral balance and a feeding programme that suits the individual horse can make a meaningful difference.

And the starting point isn't necessarily a shopping list.

It's understanding what you've already got.

A little knowledge goes a long way

At Holistic Feeds & Nutrition, we're interested in the bigger picture.

The pasture, the forage, the feed bucket and, most importantly, the horse standing in front of you.

Because sometimes the most valuable thing you can add to your feeding programme isn't another scoop.

It's a little more understanding.
